VSU Black April Commemoration 2012

WHAT IS BLACK APRIL?

April 30, 1975 marks the day that the communists of North Vietnam overtook Saigon, the capital of South Vietnam. This effectively ended the Vietnam War as all of Vietnam became unified under a communist regime. The rule of the new government was cruel and oppressive, imposing harsh punishments and re-education upon affiliates of the South Vietnamese government. Consequently, over a hundred thousand Vietnamese refugees fled to America to escape the oppression, but to this day they continue to be haunted by memories of a terrible past. Thus is the story behind Black April.

THIS YEAR…
From April 23-26, the Vietnamese Student Union at UCLA will hold an event to commemorate Black April. The week-long event is a touching and empowering commemoration held each year to bridge the generational gap between many Vietnamese-Americans and war-related immigrant families. The purpose of Black April Commemoration Week is to be as creative, educational, heart-felt, and welcoming as possible in memory of the Fall of Saigon. This year, we want to use Black April Commemoration to take a step back to see the larger picture. With the theme “Rebuilding Home: Dreams and Nightmares”, we want to look at how refugees and immigrants have been affected by the war. We will also discuss what challenges Southeast Asian Americans are still facing today, namely mental health issues and the immigration/deportation issues.

Monday: Expression Night
April 23, 2012 | 7 – 9 p.m. | Sunset Rec Buenos Aires Room
Come join us in kick starting off Black April Commemoration Week by learning how to tap into your creative side and write poetry about your life. There will be an art gallery, music and spoken word performances.

Tuesday: Nightmares
April 24, 2012 | 6 – 8 p.m. | Tentatively Campbell 3232
Mental health is a taboo subject in the API community, specifically Southeast Asian refugees. Rediscover your motivations and learn ways to help yourself and others to be well, stay well, and do well. (tying war, PTSD, and mental health). Note: Resources.

Wednesday: Dreams
April 25, 2012 | 6 – 8 p.m.| Kerckhoff Staterooms 131-135
Over 230,000 immigrants are detained each year. From 1996-2004, almost 1.5 million individuals were deported from the United States. Can writing a bad check get you deported, even if you have a Green Card? Come find out.

Thursday: Black April Commemoration
April 26, 2010 | 6 – 9 p.m. | LATC Clubhouse
Come out and join us for our Black April commemoration night, which aims to provide a space to listen, learn, reflect and remember. There will be special Guest Speakers and Panelists, a Candlelight Vigil, and complimentary dinner.
