SEA ADMIT WEEKEND 2012 [COORDINATOR AND VOLUNTEER APPLICATION]

The fourth annual Southeast Asian (SEA) Admit Weekend is a unique 4-day, 3-night program from Thursday April 12th to Sunday April 15th, 2012 that will serve as a platform for students of Burmese, Hmong, Indonesian, Khmer, Laotian, Mien, Thai, Vietnamese, and other Southeast Asian descent to experience campus life and higher education. This year, the weekend seeks to achieve a higher enrollment of Southeast Asian minority students by spreading awareness of the Southeast Asian identity and current educational issues. We hope to provide support, a sense of belonging, and the opportunity to think critically about our SEA identities as we highlight the struggles that Hmong, Khmer, Laotian, Thai, Vietnamese and other SEA students encounter in their daily lives. By exploring the resources available at UCLA through a peer-to-peer relationship, we strive to bridge the gap between higher education and community conditions. This Admit Weekend is necessary to ensure the diversity and representation of SEA students on the UCLA campus.

This year’s SEA Admit Weekend at UCLA seeks to address access and financial issues specific to the SEA community. Southeast Asians have been historically underrepresented in higher education and especially in the UC system, even though California holds the highest concentrations of many Southeast Asian groups (including Vietnamese, Thai, Laotian, Hmong, Mien, and Khmer) in the US. The recent fee increases on the UC campus is another factor that will prevent representation of Southeast Asians at UCLA. The program is highly necessary to ensure the diversity and representation UCLA strives to achieve.

Dear Applicant,

…
The Vietnamese Student Union at UCLA is proud to announce that the Fall 2011 VSU High School Conference will be held at UCLA during Week 8 of Fall Quarter (Nov. 19 2011; 7am-7pm). This year’s goal is to gather 150 high school students from all across California to promote higher education, inform on the effects of the current budget crisis, expose students to all options and routes to higher education, and have fun while doing it.

YOU can make a difference. By being a part of the conference, you have the opportunity to not only empower and educate students but also develop personal relationships with a diverse group of students that go beyond the youth conference. You will have time to share your college experiences as well as learn about current high school experiences too.

It will be an educational and fun-filled day of events including workshops connecting the state of the Vietnamese community and education, the college admissions process, culturally relevant education as well as a talent show, student/alumni panelists, and keynote speakers.

The ultimate goal is to build a critical mindset in today’s youth and future generations. What can you do to accomplish this goal? VSU is looking for experienced as well as newly interested leaders! Please review the available positions and responsibilities and fill out the application below.

Also, all coordinators are required to help with the planning process as well as the day of the event. Coordinators are allowed to decide the duration and time of their committee meetings. As a result, the time commitment of the general volunteer is dependent upon the meeting time that the coordinator sets. Generally speaking, coordinators should expect to spend a minimum of 4 hours a week on planning and development. Planning will start Week 2 of Fall Quarter.

General volunteers must be able to make the day of the event. If you are not able to but would like to still be part of the process, you are still encouraged to apply. There are many ways to help out! General volunteers should expect to spend a minimum of 2 hours a week on planning.

If you have any questions or concerns, feel free to contact Justin or Anh Nguyen, VSU High School Conference Chairpersons at vsu.hsc@gmail.com or call/text at (805) 815-9325 (Justin) or (408) 726-0092.

Sincerely,
Justin and Anh Nguyen
